Last weekend I submitted my first guest blog post about my family’s recent trip to Tucson, Arizona. It is not that I haven’t been asked before to supply some words of wisdom (ha!) to others’ blogs but this was the first one that I followed through on. Although I wasn’t 100% thrilled with the outcome (will I ever be?), I clicked send and pushed it to the editor nonetheless and the rest is history. Did I mention that I even took the pictures for the blog? Everyone got involved in making sure the pictures were the best they could be. It was like a family post rather than just my post.
The weirdest part was just how long it took me to write when it was for another person. Normally, I can crank out even the longest blog post in about an hour, complete with corrections, but the travel blog took me four hours. Yes, four hours. But maybe my memory is a little off today; after all, it has been a full week since I submitted the blog but all I know is I was still in my pajamas well past noon.
I just wanted you to know that so you could find me at Milliver’s Travels, too.
Cathie,
Thanks so much for your wonderful story on Milliver’s Travels about the Westin La Paloma in Tucson. I hope you still want to write some more for MT. You look good on there!
I haven’t polled my other writers to find out what kind of time they spend on their articles, but I can tell you that I probably put four hours into it on my end too. That’s how long it typically takes me to go through the text as an editor, resize and caption all the photos, add hand-picked related posts and author bio. And then double-check everything – usually with bleary eyes by then. 🙂
You’re so welcome! I’d love to write for Milliver’s Travels again very soon. I thought about our recent trip to an Oktoberfest in Olivenhain but although it was fun, there just wasn’t that much going on. Maybe next year for that article!
So glad to know I’m not the only one taking so long to tweak my article. I am more accustomed to picking a topic for my blog and tapping it out in about an hour or less. More care needs to go into what I write, though, when it’s going on someone else’s site, or maybe I’m just more self-conscious when there’s an editor involved (you are very good, by the way so all your bleary eyedness is not wasted)!
Anyway, know that I will produce something gladly for you again soon. In fact, I just thought of just the thing. Look for it in your inbox soon. I have to head back to the spot for some pictures!!
Ah, that’s what I love to hear . . . a writer in the throes of her next story for MT. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! 😀
