Trying Something New for a Month

47464274 - labrador retriever with leash is waiting for walk. With the New Year comes some new promises to eat better, exercise more, drink less wine, and read a book instead of tweet.  At the end of 2015, I also promised to write a blog post every single week.  Yeah, and then March came along and I’m pretty sure my drive to write 52 posts went out the window with all the other promises.  In fact, I think I started eating worse, exercising less, drinking more, and tweeting an insane number of tweets (currently at 27,800 tweets).  So maybe I’m just a contrarian and I need to say what I’m not going to do and then it’ll get done.

Every once in a while I head back to 52 Weeks: 52 Ways to Love Your (Wild) Self to get more writing prompts, to become more inspired, and at the same time to do some kind of self-improvement.  The author, Judy Clement Wall, has many great ideas, ones I haven’t thought of before.  This week’s challenge is to do something new for 30 days.  The premise is based on a TED talk given by Matt Cutts where he tried something new for 30 days.  Some things he liked and he felt it made him more adventurous, and other things, he couldn’t wait to get back to his normal self (when he gave up sugar).

I’ve always wanted to be consistent in one thing but the only thing I’m consistent in is being inconsistent.  I always know I want to do better.  I do better for a few days and then I stop.  I’ve restarted countless times only to end it again.  I forget about my plans and move onto something new and shiny.

Starting today, I’m going to do something new for a month.  Never mind all of 2017, I’m just committing to a month.  I’m pretty sure that I can get through one month of doing something.  And it’s only one thing.  It’s not a list of things, although my natural inclination is to create a giant list, but I’m going to limit myself to a list of one.  And that one thing is to walk 10,000 steps every single day.  I’ve got my Jawbone Up to keep me honest.  I haven’t had my Jawbone on my wrist since October 3rd; I’m sure the Smart Coach program will chastise me for being a slacker, but whatever.  I’ll slap it on my wrist now and take my dog for her morning walk.

Every week I will post a picture of my results.  Jawbone sends a weekly update out on Monday.  Although I’m not starting on a Monday, it will show only the results from today (Wednesday) through Sunday.  That number should be a total of at least 50,000 steps.  Yikes, that sounds like a lot.  Can I back out of this now????

What is one thing that you would like to try for a month?  Is it taking a picture a day?  Is it giving out a compliment to a random stranger?  Is it giving up sugar/caffeine/alcohol?  Let me know in the comments below and I’ll do my best to support you.

While I’m out on the trail, I’ll have plenty of time to figure out what New Year’s resolutions I shouldn’t make for 2017.

  1. I have set my Samsung Health app for 6000 steps a day, which is about 4km. It definitely helped keep track of just how little I move around some days, and except when I genuinely don’t have the time to walk, I get pretty close to that figure.
Will have to change the steps count now that I started running outside again last week!
