No doubt, we are all thinking about Christmas this time of year whether we celebrate the holiday or not. The nonstop assault on our inboxes with subject lines like the Best Christmas SALE Ever! or Last Day to Buy & Still Have It Under the Tree in Time! is a never-ending reminder of the upcoming festivities.
And if you are one of the few people who still watch regular TV, every other commercial (or every single one) is chock full of gift ideas for the ones we love like chocolate diamonds, the annual weird perfume commercials, and bows on luxury cars.
The reminders that it’s almost Christmas are daily, hourly, minutely.
The Christmas season has me once again reflecting on the traditions my family has participated in faithfully every single year. I wanted to share my list with you and hear how your family celebrates.
Ok, you caught me. Maybe I want to share our family traditions with you or maybe I’m procrastinating heading out into the mall chaos that is extra special six days before Christmas in Southern California–you’ll never know!
The Nichols’ Top 5 Christmas Traditions in no particular order:
- Baking (and eating) Peanut Butter Blossoms. Sam is our resident Peanut Butter Blossom expert–she has perfected the recipe and her technique.
- Nick makes homemade chocolate fudge (I’m sensing we’re a family of sugar addicts).
- I put up as many Christmas lights in the front yard as possible with the goal of not only looking tacky, thereby embarrassing my husband, but hopefully tripping a fuse and making the whole house go black. Dare to dream, right?
- Decorating sugar cookies (see point made after item #2). Although they aren’t made from scratch, the kids have certainly gotten crafty with their creations.
- Driving around specific neighborhoods to look at my personal heroes’ homes–Christmas lights like you’ve never seen before from the tops of their roofs to the bottoms of their fences. Some are even in sync with goofy holiday music. This is my favorite tradition of them all. Everyone used to groan every time I wanted to hop in the car and go see the lights but now the girls love the annual trek, too. Plus, it’s something to put on their Instagram.
No matter what happens in my life, whatever changes occur, I know I will continue the traditions started nearly 26 years ago.
